English vs Japanese Pokémon cards

Set structure, pack size, print quality and pricing: the practical differences before you import.
Set structure
Japanese sets are smaller and release earlier. English sets are typically assembled from several Japanese sets, so an English set list is wider and arrives months later.
Print and handling
Japanese cards are widely regarded as more consistently centred with a harder gloss, which is why many collectors submitting for grading prefer them. Card backs differ, so Japanese cards are not legal in English tournament play without sleeves matching the rest of the deck.
Cost
Japanese packs are cheaper per pack but contain fewer cards. Cost per card is often similar; the difference is which cards exist in the set and how quickly you get access to them.
